Jim H.

The moment you saw him you fell in love
Because?
Because he was real
Not really spectacular or really fratboyish
Not really anything
But true, intelligent, funny, loyal
And when it came down to it…
Honest to God honest
In a way that never hurt you
But always hurt him
Because he didn’t want to tell you
Because he didn’t want to scare you
Or have you worry about him
But if you pushed him far enough
You would see his true emotions

And that’s why when he left home
It was heartbreaking
Because he was heartbroken
And that was the guy you wanted to win
That is the guy you always want to win
Because he is kind of like Jesus
He is patient and he is kind
And it sucks to see Jesus sad
Jim is not Jesus but he could wait like him
And they also serve those who sit and wait

But even when you go back
And watch the earlier episodes
Like the one in which Jim decides to take a vacation
And so he is going to miss the wedding
You feel sorry for Pam because she truly wanted Jim as a friend
But you feel worse for Jim, because he’s so hurt
He can’t even attend his friend’s wedding

And when you think about the show
You don’t think about Jim first
He’s not the silly boss
Or the deranged assistant manager
Of course patiently he works his way up
And you see him struggle with power and authority
And you want to say,
“Oh come on now Jim, don’t be like that.”
Because he’s not like that

But you know people like Jim
They’re always going to struggle with who they are
And who they aren’t
And it’s not that they aren’t comfortable in their own skin
It’s that others make them uncomfortable in their own skin
And others are always asking so much of them
That they forget who they are sometimes
And that is Jim
It must be lonely
To be the smartest guy
But to be stuck in the middle
To lose to a player
To move away from the girl
For the girl
Or to just sit patiently and wait
Hoping that your prayers are answered
It’s not easy being Jim
