The Lifeguard

Those colder months are for us to decide
Present he still is
Watching perhaps from headquarters
During these times we are mostly on our own
Common sense customarily rules when
Poseidon is angry
The gifted challenge his raging waters
Most know to admire from afar
But do not doubt the lifeguard's presence
He is there

But those hot months…
Those hot months he stands poised
Up in the blue tower
Watching all
His job is to rescue you
You do not notice him
When you look at the foaming waters
You do not see the trident pulling underneath
The Lifeguard waits
The shelf life stirs…
As the foam dissipates the water is a dirty brown
From binoculars the lifeguard observes…

He watches you during these turbulent times
If Poseidon rallies rampant waves
And your legs are swept from underneath
The Lifeguard will call to you
For your safety, you must go
Too many lives are in peril
During the riptide the lifeguard understands
It is best not to struggle
It is best not to fight
It is best to surrender yourself to a power
You do not know

But if you do not listen for the lifeguard’s call
The Lifeguard swims out to you
With his rescue can he morphs into a dolphin
He is a wise creature of the sea
He understands the leviathan of your life
He understands that you don’t always listen
And he is there to remind you
No one ever swims alone

What a beautiful metaphorical poem. I love the way your words painted a picture in my mind of God. So graceful and effortless.
