Sunshine Cat

I saw an angel in your eyes
But you were always mine
My sunshine cat
Rising every day to greet me
After watching over me
And with me
Through the lonely nights
That never were

You were my smile
And my model for
Self-reliance
While I realized
Because of you
That life for the self
Is not life at all
Without your spirit

A God-given energy force
That could stop time
Because that was Love

Drip…drip…drip
Goes the faucet at night
Or is it my tears
When I think any noise
Is you and a late night snack
But it is the water falling into the
Emptiness
I now feel
Without my sunshine cat
Behind every corner
Is the memory of the
Of your grayed wisdom patch
On your back
Nuzzling up against my leg
When I needed that boost
Or the clip clip clip
Of your untamed nails
Tapping across the kitchen tile
Or  the ragged edges of couches
Ground up by the stretch
Of your life
One without complaint
One only of happiness
Which you brought to me

And now?
The sun still rises
And lights up stripes
On the life-stained carpet
On which you used to bask
Resting after a night of
Catching the rays of angels
In your deep pupils
Surrounded by the
Gentle, Omniscient Green
And that memory alone
Warms the heart
And also softens the soul
As you did
My friend and family
Every day I walked
Through that door
Into your loving gaze

My sunshine cat
