The Captain and the Satin Blanket

Everybody's gotta learn sometime...

They call him the Captain
He may as well be mine, too.
How long does it take for acceptance?

There they are--
Today's crew
A rag tag group of non-notables
Patrolling the vessel
This one will never win Jeopardy
This one has a couple nose rings
This one speaks 75% Ingles
This one isn't going to win any beauty contests
This one hasn't seen the gym for ages
And yet?
Yes, and yet
You cannot see beauty until you see them

Everybody's gotta learn...

They know the Captain
The Captain thirsts
The Captain hungers
The Captain dies...
When we fail to see the Captain

Everybody's gotta...

Be courageous
We shall not be at sea much longer
The Sextant is in its case
If we are to get lost
The stars are simply our hearts
Lights through the satin blanketed night
It is never truly dark
The Captain is not asleep
He merely rests
It is not time to sleep
It is time to pray

Everybody.

How long till acceptance?
How long till morning?
How long until the stars point to the horizon
Intrepidly fading into dazzling rays?
Waking all from slumber
But you still want to hit the snooze button
The opposite of the dramatic Sunset
Only few see the Sun come up
Yet we all want to see the sun go down
Because it is so easy to hide under that satin blanket
Hide from our tears
Hide from the nose ring and the broken English
Hide from the incompetence and incontinence
The thirst and the hunger
The spasms and the screams
Hide from the Captain
We can only hide our tears for so long...
But the Captain must see the Sun come up

Every day
for
Everybody
Who's
Gotta Learn
Sometime
