Clover

Rich and green, yet close to the ground
I’m the one you wanted when your luck was down
And so you plucked me up from the earth
And so you did…

I am the baby watersnake with the periscope head
You are the heron, and now I am dead
I was just learning to swim and challenge for joy
With a heron’s eyesight you looked to replace the boy
Who had taken your heart and now you have mine
Yes, and now you do…

I am the marathon runner who longs for the end
You are the sprinter who runs fast as we begin…
We weren’t even halfway before you stopped trying
I run the second half alone as part of me is dying
Yet I will cross the finish line alone
I will cross...
To find...
To go back to that beautiful field full of
Beautiful people and clovers and Sunshine

I am the clover and
I still wonder why
You plucked me from the earth and
Left me to wither and die
