The Feeling of Family

When the heater turns back on at night
Because the bills have been paid on time
The rooms are warm
And the most melodious sound may just be
The repose of man, the pleasing rise and fall
Of a family member breathing at night
Dreaming of beautiful things
After a day of
Beautiful things
And the prettiest
Is that your soul is at peace

And you know God is there

Yes, when at the dinner table
Stories of old are exchanged
And there are no cameras here
There are no microphones
Late in our lives we ought to know
Whatever we do
We do for God and family
Because that is what keeps the rooms warm
And the ice cream melts on the brownies
And becomes the perfect mixture
The puzzle pieces that fit so nicely
Are just like the images
Just like the images of the sunset’s reflection in
The rearview mirror of a car
Showing in rewind only the beauty
Of Life
The glow of a day of the ocean and the warm sand
And the smiles and the laughter and the God who is
Always there

Because upon review
It was all beautiful
Even the arguments
That helped us grow
Because we never abandoned hope
The lifeline of God always belonged to our family
And no one ever went too far
And Jesus walked on water
And cast the demons out
Who said we couldn’t
Demons only know one direction
But God knew that 180 was a matter of Divinity
Because anyone can turn around
Anyone can be the Prodigal Son
Anyone can forgive…

But there I was in that warm bed
Listening to the sound of your heart
Continue to beat on…
And the heater was on
And I’ve never felt so warm inside
