The Nova of Nightlife

Whether staring at a stucco ceiling
Or admiring a sleeping pet
The pitch of the night sky is blinding
To the bride Nightlife’s met

If all the stars aligned tonight
Cascading the dipper’s ladle full
Beauty Bright is pushing Envy away
Yet Nightlife feels the pull

Of discordant outcast novas
Just wanting to get a chance
Theirs is the saddest song
The quintessence of romance

Oft they seek to shine in glory
Yet the duration is so short
Do we ever really notice
These night minstrels who consort

And sing down behind city curtains
A light that goes unknown
A prayer that goes unanswered
Because father was never home

Bread sits not on the table
No presents under the tree
Nightlife’s partner dashes in fury
To sweep away the debris

Left behind when no one bothers
To see Who reigns above
Nightlife a cataclysmic existence
When no one notices Love

And so…?
And so.
We must start over…

He said it would take 25 years or so
To see the novas shining great
But in this quick fix society
Who will buy in and bear the wait?

Who will grasp the lantern?
And who will refill the oil?
Who will carve the way through night
When light from afar does toil?

It only takes one nova
To get the group to see
Gabriel heralding the trumpet
Playing the keys of life to be

Or not was once the question
Posed by a reason’s star
Horatio tells the story
Jewels of the crown on Fortinbras

The road to stardom traverses obscurity
But most circle the prickly pear
Be careful of sharp accusations
they crucified the Cooke City Bear

the white bark pine beetle is the enemy
Perhaps the ghetto is then, too
If we don’t pull out their solution soon
The gum stays on the corner of your shoe

And so every step you take
You walk a wee bit slow
Twenty five years is painstakingly long
But twenty five is what it takes to grow

An indigenous reblossoming desert child
Who now can bear the heat
He is the same nighttime nova
That longs only to compete

To sing at this world in slumber
And put coffee in its cup
This star is far from over
As he sings to all, “Wake up.”
