Only in LA...

...could you find graffiti on a state park hike. Unfortunately my camera is still broken so I have no visual proof, but today I was hiking in Malibu Creek State Park to the rock pools. I dove in and swam to the back side between two large rocks, and there it was, in a remote location, something like "Swaz" in blue paint, on one of Nature's volcanic rocks.
I hardly feel like the backtrails of the Malibu canyons are grounds for turf wars. Perhaps this was the case between the Chumash and Gabrielino back in the day, but I can't imagine the Bloods and Crips battling over real estate mostly dominated by tadpoles and geckos, and some very beautiful butterflies.
Regardless, it was a beautiful hike, and once the path traversed even more remote grounds, the tagging was gone. Not gone were a couple stage cars/props used for the classic TV show M.A.S.H. As my friend Max remarked, it was interesting to see how similar California was to Korea.
Another thing I learned today: Angelinos have no concept of distance. When I was at the rock pools and ready to depart to Century Lake, I asked another guy who was swimming how far away it was. He said it was quite a distance up the path. Total distance: About .5 miles. Total time: 10 minutes?
We're not in Montana anymore.
